Radium Maintenance Notice
Hello all.
Radium and its services will be down for maintenance starting June 15th, 2026 at 3:00 PM PST. Right now, there is no ETA for when services will return, as we will be focused on the rewrite along with several other QoL improvements.
But splootybean, Why Is This Happening?!
Radium's current backend, Radeon, is no longer sustainable.
Radeon was originally built in just about a week by a single developer for a fun and cute Extreme Quests event. At the time, we never expected Radium to grow into what it is today. As the project expanded, the server gathered lots of general technical debt, bugs, exploits, and security issues that were never designed to be handled at this scale.
Over the past several months, the amount of exploits, cheats, and game breaking issues has continued to drastically increase. Maintaining this existing platform while ALSO attempting to rewrite a whole new one has become increasingly difficult, especially given the small number of people who were actually able to work on it.
Beyond the technical yap, maintaining Radium has taken a severe mental toll on all of us. This constant cycle of patching exploits, bugs, and dealing with issues I don't think we should have to be dealing with at our age has led to extreme burnout and has negatively impacted the mental health of lots of people working on this passion project.
After about a week or twos discussion, the Rec Room Archive administration team voted to place Radium into an eternal maintenance until we can properly focus on doing Radium properly again.
What Now?
We will keep you all updated with the progress on the 2023 rewrite so you won't be left entirely in the dark. The Discord server will still remain functional and available, and I'll try to be as active as I can during all of this.
Your data from Radium & the Data Exporter will be supported in 2023 when we re-open. Logging back into Radium will be just as it was before the shutdown, with the option to import your data from the Data Exporter via the website. We also have some more archival-y stuff planned for when we re-open, which you all will get to see in due time : )
This sucks, but things WILL get better. Thank you all for playing Radium, and we'll keep you updated on what happens next.
